#2 Protest

The NBA maintains an impressive level of protest in the areas affected by the Maheshwar and SSP dam sites. Over the last ten years there have been many marches, vigils and hunger strikes. On 11th January 2000 Arundhati Roy joined a group of people who will be displaced by the Maheshwar dam (Madhya Pradesh) and occupied the dam construction site. After they were forcibly removed many of the protesters continued the protest by occupying Maheshwar jail for four days.

India has been forced to recruit a large female police force because the NBA's protests are conducted mainly by women. In Indian society it is not acceptable for a policeman to tackle female protesters.
