#1 Jadugora

The Uranium Corporation of India Ltd. have been mining uranium ore at Jadugora for 30 years and for 30 years the people of the Santhal tribe who live in close proximity to the mine have been exposed to low level radiation. The quality of the ore is so low that most other countries would not consider exploiting it however,India needs Uranium for its nuclear arms program and 10 pressurised water reactors.

Workers in the mine are given no safety equipment and routinely suffer from skin diseases and TB. Careless handling of waste from the mine has left villages contaminated, in this area 30% of women have fertility problems and there is a high incidence of spontaneous abortions. If a pregnancy does goes full term there is a high probability that the child will be born physically and mentally handicapped, most of these children do not live longer than a few weeks.

Despite the inescapable evidence government officials have so far refused to undertake a medical study in the area and those that have chosen to openly campaign against the mine have been accused of being CIA agents.
